After months of waiting, we finally got to meet Anna Elizabeth! Julie was scheduled to be induced Tuesday at 7 AM, but she started having contractions Monday night, around 8 PM. We called the on-call doctor, and she asked how far the contractions were apart. After telling her, she said there's no rush to leave immediately for the hospital, but Julie was probably not going to make it through the night. So, we watched a Friends episode - The One Where Rachel Is Late (how appropriate)! We packed up a few things for the stay, then left for the hospital around 10 PM.
When we got there, we literally had no idea where to go! The hospital was empty, so we headed to the labor and delivery floor. We must have looked lost, because a nurse stopped us and asked what we were looking for. He pointed us through some double doors. When we got to the nurses station, they asked what they could help us with, and Julie said, "Uh, I think I'm in labor?" She took us to a delivery room, where Julie got all ready. She donned her scrubs, got the blood pressure wrap put on, had about 10 wires coming from various parts of her body, and now, she was ready to go!
About 14 hours later, Anna arrived! She is perfect! Born Tuesday at 12:47 PM, she weighed 7 lb, 8 oz and was 20 1/2 inches long. Immediately, we noticed her dimples (Julie couldn't be happier about that).
She was taken to the nursery for all of our family to see, but the nurses noticed she wasn't breathing as well as they would like, so they performed a chest X-ray on her. They told us there was some fluid in Anna's lungs, which could mean a variety of things, but as a precaution, they were taking her to the Neonatal ICU. We of course were worried, since they tell you the worst thing it could be (at first, they said the fluid was due to a "tear in her lung"). We just wanted to hold and love our baby! They moved Julie out of the delivery room and got her set up in a post-partem room. A couple of hours later, we were allowed to go see little Anna. She was in a little plastic tent, where they were pumping in oxygen to help her breath easier. We weren't allowed to hold her just yet, but we were able to touch her and talk to her.
This morning, after a long night with not much sleep, we went back to the NICU, where the nurse told us their new diagnosis. Anna did not have a tear in her lung, but, rather, her lungs got filled with fluid during birth, and it just took some time to completely dry out. Looking at the oxygen monitor, she was doing 100% better than the day before. We could not have been happier! We both got to hold Anna and feed her. We really felt like parents.
This afternoon, Anna was released from NICU and was brought up to our room, where we have been able to hold her, love her, and of course spoil her! Both sets of parents and our siblings are all here to celebrate with us. It has been a wonderful day!
